Representable and Continuous Functionals on Banach Quasi *-Algebras

In the study of locally convex quasi *-algebras an important role is played by representable linear functionals; i.e., functionals which allow a GNS-construction. This paper is mainly devoted to the study of the continuity of representable functionals in Banach and Hilbert quasi *-algebras. Some other concepts related to representable functionals (full-representability, *-semisimplicity, etc) are revisited in these special cases. In particular, in the case of Hilbert quasi *-algebras, which are shown to be fully representable, the existence of a 1-1 correspondence between positive, bounded elements (defined in an appropriate way) and continuous representable functionals is proved.

Complex powers and non-compact manifolds

We study the complex powers $A^{z}$ of an elliptic, strictly positive pseudodifferential operator $A$ using an axiomatic method that combines the approaches of Guillemin and Seeley. In particular, we introduce a class of algebras, ``extended Weyl algebras,'' whose definition was inspired by Guillemin's paper on the subject. An extended Weyl algebra can be thought of as an algebra of ``abstract pseudodifferential operators.'' Many algebras of pseudodifferential operators are extended Weyl algebras. Weak commutation relations of unbounded operators and applications

Four possible definitions of the commutation relation $[S,T]=\Id$ of two closable unbounded operators $S,T$ are compared. The {\em weak} sense of this commutator is given in terms of the inner product of the Hilbert space $\H$ where the operators act. Some consequences on the existence of eigenvectors of two number-like operators are derived and the partial O*-algebra generated by $S,T$ is studied. Some applications are also considered.

Fixed Points in Topological *-Algebras of Unbounded Operators

We discuss some results concerning fixed point equations in the setting of topological *-algebras of unbounded operators. In particular, an existence result is obtained for what we have called {\em weak $\tau$ strict contractions}, and some continuity properties of these maps are discussed. We also discuss possible applications of our procedure to quantum mechanical systems.

Bounded elements of C*-inductive locally convex spaces

The notion of bounded element of C*-inductive locally convex spaces (or C*-inductive partial *-algebras) is introduced and discussed in two ways: The first one takes into account the inductive structure provided by certain families of C*-algebras; the second one is linked to the natural order of these spaces. A particular attention is devoted to the relevant instance provided by the space of continuous linear maps acting in a rigged Hilbert space.

On the Toeplitz algebras of right-angled and finite-type Artin groups

The graph product of a family of groups lies somewhere between their direct and free products, with the graph determining which pairs of groups commute and which do not. We show that the graph product of quasi-lattice ordered groups is quasi-lattice ordered, and, when the underlying groups are amenable, that it satisfies Nica's amenability condition for quasi-lattice orders. As a consequence the Toeplitz algebras of these groups are universal for covariant isometric representations on Hilbert space, and their representations are faithful if the isometries satisfy a properness condition given by Laca and Raeburn. Representable linear functionals on partial *-algebras

A GNS-like *-representation of a partial *-algebra \({{\mathfrak A}}\) defined by certain representable linear functionals on \({{\mathfrak A}}\) is constructed. The study of the interplay with the GNS construction associated with invariant positive sesquilinear forms (ips) leads to the notions of pre-core and of singular form. It is shown that a positive sesquilinear form with pre-core always decomposes into the sum of an ips form and a singular one.

Fundamental isomorphism theorems for quantum groups

The lattice of subgroups of a group is the subject of numerous results revolving around the central theme of decomposing the group into "chunks" (subquotients) that can then be compared to one another in various ways. Examples of results in this class would be the Noether isomorphism theorems, Zassenhaus' butterfly lemma, the Schreier refinement theorem for subnormal series of subgroups, the Dedekind modularity law, and last but not least the Jordan-H\"older theorem. SPECTRAL INVARIANCE FOR CERTAIN ALGEBRAS OF PSEUDODIFFERENTIAL OPERATORS

We construct algebras of pseudodifferential operators on a continuous family groupoid G that are closed under holomorphic functional calculus, contain the algebra of all pseudodifferential operators of order 0 on G as a dense subalgebra, and reflect the smooth structure of the groupoid G, when G is smooth. As an application, we get a better understanding on the structure of inverses of elliptic pseudodifferential operators on classes of non-compact manifolds. For the construction of these algebras closed under holomorphic functional calculus, we develop three methods: one using two-sided semi-ideals, one using commutators, and one based on Schwartz spaces on the groupoid.
